The White Hart continued

[The crew have encountered Jarriere in the White Hart and there's a great deal of confusion. Jarriere thinks they think he killed Avon and Blake, but their anger at all three for the subterfuge is being directed at Jarriere who is concerned for his life.]

Jarriere:
[Sighs, and makes helpless gesture]

A professional notices when there's a ship-to-ship vidlink recording his crime. An amateur does not. Which are you?
[smiles] Yes. Excellent point.
A vidlink? [He supposes this is the point in the conversation where he should give up pretending not to have killed Blake and Avon, and pretend that he did] Your wee friend is right, they were bastards. Why would anyone be so paranoid...
Yes, that's a very good question. Why would anyone be so paranoid...?
That Avon was a wee bit fey.
You don't say.
He was fahrbot!
[Sighs] Och, if ye saw it all ye saw it all. Ye'd better get on with it. What d'ye have in mind?

Jarriere: At first? [He thought Vila was a tolerant sort of bloke, but this seems to be taking it a bit far]

Well, when we thought you'd actually done it. Then we blamed them more than you.
[muttering] I blamed all of them.
[These people really are insane] Ye blamed them for me killing them?
A latent deathwish is a powerful motivation. Clearly, what happened was as much a suicide as it was a murder, wouldn't you say? [Hey, technically true...]
Och, they both seemed rather under the weather, but they didna lie down and let me shoot them!
Course not! Wouldn't have been as dramatic!
I should hope not, that would have been a cold-blooded execution! Mind you, they didn't put up much of a struggle, though, did they. Perhaps that's what it was.
[Resigned] If ye say so. That's my job. So what are ye going to do with me?

[Ignoring all of them on the red herring of the new contract, and focusing on the only thing that matters to him]

So ye were the one who put it about that I'd broken a contract and smeared my name across the whole sector, since when I havena been able to pick up proper work anywhere, and I'm reduced to doing a bit of contract and maintenance on this station...

[Suddenly his hand whips out a gun and places it against Cally's head]
[Stark screams and lunges in Jarriere's direction. Fortunately, perhaps, he's farther away from him than the others are, so they probably have time to act before he does anything too stupid.]
[calmly] I wouldn't. I have a gun trained on where you live.
I was assuming that from the moment I saw ye. If I'd wanted to take one of ye with me when I thocht ye were gaun to execute me, I'd ha' done it at the start. But I did promise Vila I'd try not to kill any of ye unnecessarily. [He quietly hands his gun to Vila]
[Stark skids to an abrupt hault, looking so taken aback he almost forgets to be relieved.]
Oh! [takes it] Thanks mate. I really appreciate that. The thought, I mean, not being that find of guns meself.

[puts it gingerly on the table and looks around] Can we all calm down now? [to Jarriere] What're you doing here anyway?
I told ye. Construction and maintenance. All anyone will hire me for just now.
[takes the gun from Vila] Cally? The safety catch was on the whole time.

[to Jarriere] Thank you. You've always been a man of your word.
Thank ye, Kerril. In the end, that's all that matters.

[He takes the gun back from her, holsters it, and walks quietly out of the bar]
